How to HIDE your secret Vacation from the Kids.

Anyone else plan trips that are a secret from the kids? Learn how to hide your secret vacation from the kids.

Hey guys, I am 1 FULL day away from our summer vacation and keeping this a secret is HARD. Luckily for me, due to my job and life, my kids know where we are going, but not when. They have no idea that in 2 more sleeps…we leave. That leaves tomorrow as my final day to pack and sync everything up…ALL IN SECRET. See my tips on how to hide your secret vacation from the kids.

Call your Travel Agent AT NIGHT:

So as much as I prefer to be watching TV or finally resting my legs for the day, most families contact me at night AND for good reason. The trip is a secret and how do you chat when little ears are listening? I have had parents call me from the car, from a fake grocery trip, from the backyard, from the neighbors and of course from work (usually during lunch hour). But the most common is parents whispering to me over the phone while the littles sleep. So tip #1, keep little ears away from the conversation. PS – I have NO problem working in the evening to accommodate your secret trip.

Hide your Mail:

So luckily for “snail mail” Disney doesn’t send you much in the mail after you have booked, but every once in a while they do. Like a “Can’t wait to see you soon” booklet. And of course Magicbands WAY later and I usually send a little care package. BUT, I have had many people give me grandma’s address. But they often forget to change that address on their Disney account, so they still get the mailings. So best bet…is too get the mail yourself and if its from Disney, say its an advertisement or a gift for someone else. And do this for your email too people. Ever hand your kids your phone? I know my emails pop up when they come in. Eek…kids who can read might see something they shouldn’t. This is true for app countdowns.

Shopping in Secret:

Mom why are you shopping for bathing suits in winter? Mom why are you looking for our summer clothes? Or mom why are you getting sunscreen. These are ALL questions those little stinkers will ask. I have learned to shop WAY ahead of time and when I am sans kids. Or I just purchase 1-2 items at a time, so they don’t suspect. I also buy extra shorts/bathing suits when they are on clearance in the next size up before its winter and I find out they grew. Planning ahead is the key…as once they get a thought its happening…its hard to keep a tight lip. Kids are smart.

Packing:

I pack in advance. Pack in a room that isn’t a common location for the kids, like a closest or the basement. I also pack as I do laundry so slowly they are missing more undies or a few shirts, etc. Mine would notice if ALL their Disney tees were gone. AS I am folding, I am packing and tucking away clothes. Then I put the packing cubes in my laundry basket and walk them down to the basement and then put in suitcases. Once those suitcases are out, they are noisy little creatures…you might just give in to all the questions. I am also known to pack at night or early in the morning while they are sleeping. Of course if you can, pack while they are in school. Sadly for me its summer and I am running out of reasons for why the suitcases have moved.

LIE:

I hate this suggestion, but I do it. Kids can sense things. Mine will notice me running around more crazy than usual. They will notice me hiding in the basement or my room with the door closed. They will noticed me talking in a soft tone, in my room with the door closed (yes, talking to Disney). So I lie. I pretend that next week we are doing XY and Z. In fact my kids think we have a doctors appointment on Monday which is why we have to return the library books/DVDs early. Sadly they also think we are still doing sports next week and will be participating in a party 🙁 I just need to lie for 1 more day, but its getting hard. I wasn’t planning on lieing, they just ask TOO many questions.

Other tips:

Speak in code. We did this alot when the kids were little. Change your vacation destination to something else, like tennis or bowling or going to the “mall”. This way you can talk more openly but using code words. Honey, when we go to that new mall, lets make sure to remember to get passes to the cool activities. Hehehe. You can also take turns distracting. Hubby takes them somewhere while you pack, then switch. But mine totally start asking question when all of a sudden my hair is done, my nails are painted and they both got haircuts…all in the same week. So my “lie” is we are getting ready for school early to beat the rush, lol. But yes, try to space out the beautification.

How do you hide your secret? Any tips to share?

Disney Cruise Line – After Dark

Wondering what to do on a Disney Cruise when its Night Time, any evening activities?  READ to find out.

Hey guys, today I wanted to talk about a Disney Cruise in the evening, you know after dinner, but before bed 😉  So you had your dinner, you saw the evening entertainment show…now what?  Drinking at the bar, evening cocktails in a lounge with soft LIVE music, Adult Trivia or Game Shows…or my NEW favorite (Silent DJ Party).

For those with kids, young kids…you might just be heading to bed, having a cocktail on your balcony while the kids sleep or you might be passed out from all the sun, fun and entertainment during the day.  BUT for those with older kids or those cruising without kids…there is a whole mess of fun in the evening that I only recently got to enjoy as I left the kiddies at home.  OR you could cruise with another family and have ladies night and guys night, swapping off with each other.

Games and Trivia:

So for those who can manage it…there is usually a game or two going on in the evening.  Think 80’s trivia or a Match Your Mate game.  Perhaps Dream Quest is more your speed?  The “Quest” game is like a scavenger hunt using items currently ON the people in the Game Room – like a key or a coin, etc.  This can be quite funny, but depending on the items they ask for…a little crazy for some.

LIVE Lounge/DJ:

This is what it sounds like…the Crew Staff DJ will often go from bar, to lounge to pub and play music.  The Ship’s LIVE band will do the same.  Think soft singing, gentle music and often times an impressive instrument solo.  Its a peaceful way to end the evening with a glass of wine and soft chatting with your partner.  On the Dream we also heard a wonderful pianist.

Silent DJ Party:

This FUN event was amazingly entertaining, for both the participants and the viewers.  It involves participants wearing headphones and listening to music while dancing.  ONLY they can hear what is playing, but YOU, as the viewer can hear them “lip sing” and watch them dance.  Partners can be listening to 2 different songs, while singing (usually out loud) and trying to also dance with each other.  One could be Latin Dance tunes and the other could be Country.  Its hysterical to watch and fun to participate in.  Many times I thought to myself…I want what he is having as some cruisers were really having a good time.  Don’t miss this activity.  I noticed many young adults doing this as well.

Silent DJ Party

Enjoying the TUNES at the Silent DJ Party.

Movies:

And for those who want something a little less dance party and perhaps more (the kids are awake)…there are late night movies playing as well.  Usually one movie is playing in the theater and one is playing on the pool deck (grab a sweater).  Both are a great way to end the night if the kids aren’t tired and you still want some Disney fun.

Enjoy the VIEW:

My personal way to end the night is to WALK the top decks of the ship.  Feel the soft breeze of the night on your face, enjoy a cocktail and stroll.  Watch the waves as they crash against the ship under the moon light.  Witness the calm of the ship in its nighttime spender.  The lights of the pool area are beautiful in the dark night.  So peaceful and elegant.  I could sit and enjoy that for hours.

So as most people think about what they can do during the day and rushing to this activity to the next…sometimes its nice to enjoy the night with some soft music, a Disney Movie or a the night sky glowing on the ship.  Either way, its just the beginning of another beautiful day…so enjoy the night and plan for the next day ahead!

WE love our Disney Cruises in my house and I would love to book you a fabulous Cruise.  Contact me if looking to Sail with Mickey on the High Seas – Mahalo for FOLLOWING, Nina

Disney Cruise Line – Drinking and Mixology Classes

Headed on a Disney Cruise? Want to enjoy some Adult Drinking? Thinking about Mixology Classes?  READ…

Hey Guys, back talking about Disney Cruise Line again today…answering a common question or Goal (if you will) – Drinking on a Disney Cruise.  When on Vacation, many think of 2 things: Relaxing and Enjoying an Adult Beverage.  So why not take a Mixology Class?

After I book a cruise for a client and towards the “planning” phase, beyond the date and stateroom selection…people start asking about Excursions, Adult-Only Meals (see post on Palo) and Classes (yep classes)…more specifically Mixology Classes.  Mixology Classes are so popular, some groups even arrange their own.

Mixology Class?

What is a Mixology Class you ask??  Well it is what it sounds like, you are taking a class where you LEARN how to MIX.  Mix what?  Well Mix ADULT beverages, AKA Alcohol, you silly 😉

Ariel’s READY!!

You can sign up ahead of time (Online) or if availability…on the ship.  Of course if you wait until on the ship, like I did, you need to do it ASAP.  Its $25 per person (or that’s what I paid).  You select a time/date for your class and meet at one of the local watering-holes on the ship.  Our class was in a tiny, quaint little bar called the Skyliner.  Our “teacher” was a bartender on the ship.  I forget how long but he has been teaching this class, on the Dream, for several years and really knew his stuff.

What do you do?

The concept is simple…you learn how to mix your own drinks.  Drinks you can then make at home; host parties, take to the pool, share with friends.  But when on the ship, you are making drinks you can then DRINK.  That’s right, this class is known for getting people a little tipsy…especially if you are a light weight and/or chug these cocktails.  Same with the Wine Tasting Classes or Hard Liqueur Tastings.  So for $25 you get 5 (decent sized) drinks PLUS learn whats in them and the process.  For our class we made 2 ourselves, then the last 3 were per volunteers.  And per our “teacher”, it gets more difficult to have everyone make own after 2 cocktails, lol.

NOTE – I was upfront with my allergies and a few drinks were adjusted per my needs.  They were very accommodating and thoughtful…as everyone else got the volunteer made drinks, I got 2 very special drinks made by the teacher himself 🙂

Also NOTE – If you want a FULL recipe or ingredients list…you better be prepared to video this or type in your phone…as recipe cards are NOT passed out (which would have made this SO much better).

I give this class a thumbs up, especially if cruising solo (Adult Only) or with older kids (teens+).  I can’t imagine people drinking this much in the afternoon and still managing to parents small children, lol.  At least I couldn’t.  I would need a nap, lots of water and some serious junk food.
